What is a Glowstone?

A refillable oil lamp made from a single natural specimen of crystal, fossil, mineral or stone. The specimen is drilled and fitted by hand in Oregon with an oil reservoir and a fiberglass wick. Lit, the flame shows color and structure inside the material. Unlit, it is still the specimen.

Is the work in the photographs the one I receive?

Yes. Each listed work is one of one. The object photographed is the object that ships, with its own edges, inclusions and marks.

How does it work?

Lamp oil sits in a reservoir at the base of the piece. A braided fiberglass wick, held in a glass wick holder, draws the oil up through a drilled channel to the flame.

Does the wick burn down?

No. The fiberglass wick does not burn away in normal use. Its tip darkens, which is expected. If a wick is ever lost or damaged, write to the studio about a replacement.

What oil should I use?

Pure paraffin lamp oil. The studio recommends Firefly Safe & Green, which is generally odorless. Kerosene, torch fuel, citronella oil and similar fuels smoke and leave soot, and should not be used.

How long does a fill last?

At a low flame, a single wick burns for about one hour per 5 ml of oil. Each work's page gives its reservoir capacity and estimated burn time.

How do I refill it?

With the lamp cool, lift out the wick holder and wick, then pour oil through the supplied funnel using the supplied measuring cup. Add only as much oil as you plan to burn. The full steps are in the user guide.

Can I add a scent?

Yes, optionally, by combining pure plant essential oils with Firefly Safe & Green oil. The user guide gives the amount and the oils the studio recommends.

Can I use it outdoors?

Yes, with care. Wind can push a large flame against the stone and discolor it, so keep the flame low and set the work inside a spherical glass container or lantern to block the wind. Keep it out of rain and snow: water in the wick opening stops the lamp from lighting until the reservoir dries out.

Will the stone change over time?

The stone is not consumed. Some minerals, including amethyst, citrine, smoky quartz and fluorite, can fade with long exposure to direct sunlight.

Where do you ship?

Every work ships from Oregon to addresses in the United States, packed by hand and insured for its full value. Details are on the Shipping and returns page.

How do I pay?

Each available work is purchased from its own page through Stripe's secure checkout, which accepts major cards and common digital wallets. Glowstone never sees or stores your card number.

Can I see the work in person?

Yes. Glowstone shows at regional art festivals, where more works are on view than are listed online. Dates are on the Events page.

Do you work with interior designers?

Yes. For Designers explains how to specify an available work or commission one for a client project.

Do you take commissions?

Yes. A commission begins with a brief about the space and is individually quoted. The Commissions page explains each stage.
